St Mary's Orphanage Tudhoe |
St Mary's OrphanageSt Mary's Orphanage, also known as "Tudhoe Home Certified Poor Law School for girls" was in operation from the late 19th Century up until the 1960s. Orgininally only taking in girls, in 1939 boys were also admitted. Children were admitted to the home for all sorts of reasons, not just orphans. The building (above) replaced an older Tudhoe Academy in the 1880s. This one was demolished in the 1960s, although the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to St Charles of Borromeo still exists.
